This is a little bit of a departure from the usual collegiate themed mystery. Kate is asked to teach a senior seminar on the Antigone(appropriate for a murder mystery) at her old school, the Theban. A young man is found unconscious and bleeding, having been frightened by the school's guard dogs, and shortly thereafter his mother is found dead under similar circumstances. This is very much like the other Fansler mysteries, although the setting is different. The mystery is difficult to figure out and this is faster reading than the usual Cross mystery. I enjoyed it even more than usual.
The Kate Fansler books are some of the most beautifully written mysteries that may be found anywhere. I thoroughly enjoy them and the persiflage of the heroine.
interesting plot and characters--well-written
Plotless and pointless, this book was only interesting to me as a period piece. Lots and lots of suspense free discussion about the late sixties anti-war anti establishment flower children especially those privileged to attend a private prep school and the intellects who run and teach the privileged. Clever talking ladies and kids with huge vocabularies they use as ammunition in word battles. The mystery body appears at the 45% mark in the book and you have to wonder if the poor soul didn't just get talked to death. Practically no character development of the victim, leaves us caring less. Most shocking is how the characters we really get to know about have nothing to do with the mystery at all. I only finished reading this because my book club was discussing it.
This is actually a good mystery for young adults. A quick look at "Antigone" will enhance the plot. I also found this 4th book in the Fansler series to be the the best so far, but Cross still struggles with plausible endings. This one had a spectacularly ridiculous denouement. At least that prevented guessing the end!
I like Amanda Cross books. This was a bit slow. It is dated so readers who were not familiar with late 60s-early 70s social changes might wonder what the big deal is.
I really like Aunt Kate. Her adventures are just this side of believable - not likely for an average person - but for somebody of Kate's background, profession and family as well as the locale - New York! - it can happen. Teenage behavior can be understood and interpreted by Aunt Kate to lead to a satisfactory conclusion. The dogs' behavior is just as expected!
