*****SPOILERS READ AT YOUR OWN PERIL*****This book was fun, quick passed, and engaging. If I am remembering clearly, Toby had to deal with quite a few things in this book, pulling on all the resources that she has gathered in times past. Tamed Lightning plays a role with a new character that is a Shyshuai (which literally means cricket... don't even get me started on that part of it, I am working really hard to ignore it) and the issues that were not dealt with in the past with I think its called dreamers glass is finally being dealt with. Then of course the main person that all this trouble is surrounding, Chelsea, Etienne's daughter. I felt like I spent most of the book traveling around trying to find her while everyone continuously argues with Toby, including Chelsea's mother. Oh! and don't forget the betrayal in the Court of the Cats.
⭐️ Character development: Toby really does not change much, it is difficult to talk about character development when I am reading a series, but in this book you finally see the beginning of Toby and Tybalt's relationship, FINALLY! Also, Chelsea's character was a refreshing change.
⭐️⭐️ World building: Freebie, I love the fact that this series is based in the Bay Area, it makes my visiting there more interesting.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ease of read: Page turner.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Plot twist: Mmhmm... and them some.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Lasting impression: Loved this book! My main issue was that everyone kept arguing with Toby, her life (and my sanity) would be so much better if people would just stop fighting her at every turn.

Ashes of Honor October Daye Series Book 6 edition by Seanan McGuire Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
ASHES OF HONOR is the newest release in Seanan McGuire's October Daye series. This series has slowly become one of my absolute favorites in urban fantasy. It has fabulous world building, characters that constantly grow and adapt, and a storyline that continues to deepen and evolve with every book. These books are an auto buy for me and I cannot recommend them highly enough!
This book finds Toby in a very sad state. She is still healing from the events of the previous book, One Salt Sea, and the losses that she experienced. She's pulled deep into herself and managed to shut out almost everyone who cares about her. Etienne comes to her with a very personal request, recover his newly-discovered, changeling daughter, and Toby cannot resist a friend. Even though Chelsea is only half fae, she has more power than the Tuatha have seen in centuries. She's on the run from someone or something and Toby has to find her before she rips unrepairable holes throughout Faerie.
"You can't save everyone and leave yourself lost, October. It isn't fair. Not to you and not to the people who care about you." - Tybalt
The kidnapped child is a plotline that Ms. McGuire has used before, but she changes the details of this one substantially and makes it feel new and fresh. Seeing Etienne deal with the fact that he actually has a daughter, let alone that she has been kidnapped, was very interesting. We learn quite a bit more information about him, his background, and what life was like at Shadowed Hills while Toby was a fish. I liked the resolution of this story and am interested to learn more about Chelsea's powers and the sealed realms of Faerie.
The real strength of the October Daye novels lies in the characters. Toby herself is strong, caring, incredibly nuanced, and has a fascinating background. She has joined the hallowed ranks of incredible heroines like Kate Daniels, Rachel Morgan, and Chess Putnam. She is completely believable and her emotions run the absolute gamut. I mourned with her, I hoped with her, and I loved with her. I felt everything that she did. I found myself almost in tears, both happy and sad, many times throughout this book.
Toby's life wouldn't be complete without the rag tag family she has collected around herself. As I said before, we learn much more about Etienne but we also have appearances from both Sylvester and Luna. May, Toby's former fetch, is a large part of her life and has basically become her sister. Quentin, Toby's squire, is endearing and quick-witted. He continues to come into his own with each book. Raj, the Prince of Cats, also looks to Toby as his unofficial knight and I love seeing the vulnerability in him that only comes out around Toby and Tybalt. The Luidaeg and Walter, the Sea Witch and a chemistry-teaching fae respectively, make appearances to offer their valuable services to Toby and her investigation. We also get to visit with April, the countess of Tamed Lightening and the only cyber-dryad. Since April is mainly a computer system, it is hilarious to see her trying to understand the nuisances of human interaction.
"'He said that he was sure you would be amendable to this course of action.' April paused, eyes widening, before she said indignantly, 'I believe he may have lied to me!'" - April O'Leary
I know, I haven't mentioned Tybalt yet... Oh Tybalt, the dashing King of Cats, how swoon-worthy you were in this book. I've been Team Tybalt since the very first novel and I am happy to say, we get a very large amount of development on the Toby-Tybalt romantic front. Tybalt has been Toby's rock, her calm in the storm, the one person she can always count on to show up with both chaos and assistance. They spar and argue and flirt and fight, the romantic tension is delicious. The payoff though, that was unbelievably beautiful.
"'It's been a long time since I've loved someone, but I know what it feels like. When you turn from me, it hurts. When you think badly of me, I think badly of myself. When you do stupid, suicidal things, I want to slap you upside the head and demand to know how you can be so brilliant and so blind at the same time.' Tybalt's expression was calm. 'If that's not love, what is it?'"- Tybalt
I am emotionally invested in this series entirely and this book just confirmed my devotion. If you enjoy fae-influenced, mystery-based urban fantasy with a strong lead heroine and a motley cast of supporting characters, check out this series. The first book was a little rough, but Seanan McGuire soon smoothed out the edges and has created an amazing series that deserves more recognition.

MY SHIP IS FINALLY SAILING!!!!
OK OK so this series really isn’t about relationships. It is much more UF than PNR and there are mysteries to be solved, plots to be uncovered and a dying Faery to save….BUT MY SHIP IS FINALLY HAPPENING….don’t judge me I’m just really excited about it.
TnT (Toby and Tybalt) finally got some traction. There is kissing, some deep conversations, kissing, admittance of feelings and kissing….did I mention the kissing. *happy dancing on a table* That alone is a great reason to read this book. But more than that are the other plot lines happening, character developments and a changling child to save. After the last book Toby’s friends are a bit worried that perhaps she won’t be able to be unbiased and removed from that kind of situation.
***“I can do my job.”
“Really. You can follow a teenage changeling, stolen from her mortal parent, kept from her fae parent, and feel no personal connection that might cloud your judgment?”***
Toby is always ready and willing to come to the aide of her friends not matter what the trouble even when it might bring up some of her baggage. As we all know now anytime Toby gets involved there are going to be some interesting times.
***”… I retained October to locate her. Unfortunately, there have been complications.”
“You involved Toby. Of course there have been complications. If you don’t want complications, you buy her a bus ticket and send her to Vancouver to buy those coffee-flavored candy bars they have in Canada.”***
They do have a point….but then we the reader would miss out on all the fun.
~~~~The Short of It~~~~
A teleporting changling teenager has been making portals all over the place and she is really strong. This wouldn’t be a great concern except she is teleporting in to Fae worlds that have been locked and opening then could destabilize the Knowes of this world and end up killing a lot of people. And then said changling disappeared whether she is lost or kidnapped is unknown, however what is known is that she is dangerous.
***“If you don’t find her soon, she’s going to start opening doors, and she’s not going to be able to stop. Those doors want to be open, and they’ll force her to keep on going. Killing her won’t undo the damage she has the potential to cause. If she opens a door all the way to the Heart of Faerie, it won’t close. The Heart wants people. It’s lonely. And that means it’s going to try to pull her toward it.”***
~~~~The other great stuff~~~~
Again I’m loving how this world just keeps opening up and becoming deeper and more vibrant. Not only do we get a look into some of the closed worlds of Faery but also we get more glimpses into The Court of Cats. But I especially liked spending some time with some past favorite characters of mine like April, Quentin, May, The Luidaeg and of course Tybalt.
But even more I like digging deeper into who and what Toby is and why she seems so desperately to need to help all those around her.
****“Sometimes I wonder if it’s because you spent so long lost that you must insist on bringing every lost thing home.” Tybalt pushed away from the counter, covering the distance between us in a single fluid motion. He was still wearing his human disguise. I hadn’t noticed it before, not with everything else going on. The smell of pennyroyal radiated from his skin. “You can’t save everyone and leave yourself lost, October. It isn’t fair. Not to you and not to the people who care about you.”****
Toby has been so broken and lost since coming out of that pond and after the emotional events at the end of the last book it is clear that she has a long road back. But I totally adored all the Tybalt time we get in this book and it became clear why all that sexual tension emanated between them to this great build up. I’m really hoping that this relationship sticks since Tybalt almost always steals the page whenever he is on it.
I’m desperately looking forward to the next book as each new book opens up just a little more of this fun world and its slightly dark characters.
